After the party

So the media were right and the Red Hot Chili Peppers (avec Toots of the legendary Maytals) played the Gouverneur Bay Estate on Saturday night as predicted. We didn’t make it to the gig and realistically, we were never going to get near Eclipse, but it was easy to share the late evening buzz from the Rue de la République as the fireworks went off over Gustavia and the A-listers were ferried to and from Eclipse and the other yachts ranged around the tiny harbour. Was that George Lucas we saw, albeit at a distance?

By all accounts, Mahi-mahi was also on the menu for the 400-odd guests (who said 300?) who drove themselves or were limoed through the super-tight party security. Xavier Pinet, one of St Bart’s culinary elite did the catering for the Abramovich party – but our New Year’s Eve supper tasted just as good in town. Hey! It’s St Bart’s and fish heaven – what do you expect?

Our extended and long-anticipated weekend certainly didn’t cost the £5 mil that Mr A reportedly put into his bash either. But it was still enormous fun getting a sniff of the island’s celebrity lifestyle before heading back to what will certainly be a cold and windswept UK next week.

In the meantime, back to superyacht business… Catching up on the media commentary online, we were surprised to read the suggestion in the Telegraph that some people might have considered the 536-foot long Eclipse an eyesore as it dominated Gustavia harbour.

As professional superyacht people with a valid and experienced view of superyacht style, we couldn’t disagree more. Having now seen Eclipse in the flesh – and I’ve seen most of the top yachts in my time – I can’t help wondering how anyone with any feeling for stunning lines could consider the Abramovich flagship anything but a gem, and a fitting crown jewel in the Terence Disdale portfolio – until his next masterpiece? Hey ho!

Just for the record, we love Eclipse. So, thank you Mr Abramovich for commissioning such delectable eye candy – even if the Super Yachts Directory didn’t get an invite to Gouverneur Bay. Maybe next year!

Big night on St Bart’s

There’s only one topic of conversation on St Barts and St Maarten this weekend. In case you’ve been asleep since Christmas Day, it’s the Abramovitch bash at his little place above Gouverneur Beach – 70-acres of prime beachfront real-estate that was once owned by David Rockefeller.

All week, to the incessant, but surprisingly engaging soundtrack of Radio St Barth FM, we’ve been star-spotting around the island and speculating – along with the world’s media – about the guest line-up and the Chelsea boss’s choice of live entertainment. Based on the widely circulated pics of Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and his family, the smart money is on the Chilis for the exclusive 10 till 4 party and its 300+ guests.

And then there’s the appearance of Eclipse, the jewel in the crown of the St Bart’s New Year yacht sail-in. Even if we don’t make it into Mr A’s gig, we’re hoping for a closer look at the Terence Disdale designed Blohm + Voss-built Eclipse over the weekend – all 164 beautiful metres of her, complete with those three launches, two helipads and the much talked about mini-sub. Something tells me that with one of the tightest-controlled guest lists and the usual ultra-strict Abramovitch security machine in place there’s no way we’ll get aboard this time. We can but dream…

Realistically, if we want anything more than a long-distance view, it’ll mean sweet talking our way onto one of the usual superyacht entourage that have joined Eclipse off the island. Doable? It all depends on who’s here and what happens tomorrow. Who knows – if we can’t swing this we’ll have a ball putting on our own ‘island chic’ tomorrow night, piling into the hired SMART and heading over to our Gustavia to celebrate over Mahi-Mahi en-papillote. Whatever happens, we’ve got New Year’s Eve covered and we’ll be seeing in 2012 in style.

In the meantime, we’ll keep our ears to the ground over the next 48. Look out for another posting when the hangover’s have worn off next week. And in the meantime, whether you’re celebrating on Eclipse, rubbing shoulders with the A-listers at the party of the year, or just chilling out at a comfy 26 degrees, have a great New Year’s Eve. Perini Navi Group: Sales contract for hull number one of the 69m sailing yacht series signed.

Three contracts signed by the Group in 2011

The Perini Navi Group has closed the year 2011 on a positive note with the signing of a sales contract on a new 69m sailing yacht. Two more contracts for 60m sailing yachts were signed last summer.

The new 69m yacht, the second longest of the Perini Navi fleet after the clipper The Maltese Falcon, will be delivered in 2015.

The yacht, designed and created by the Perini Navi Group with additional consulting from Philippe Briand, is the latest expression of the high standards of design, technology and quality that have always characterized Perini Navi yachts. Innovation, elegance and comfort at the highest levels possible are just some of the elements that have allowed the Perini Navi Group to distinguish itself in the years and successfully confirm the value of its brand, its team and of its products.

The interior layout has been designed by the Perini Navi Design Office and will be completed in conjunction with the American interior design studio PH Design.

At the end of the year 2011 the Group’s orders amount to about 170 million Euro, with six yachts sold and currently under construction. The Group has also invested in the construction of two sailing yacht hulls, of 38 and 60m, that can be sold and consigned within the next two years.

The past year has seen the launching of the sailing yacht Fidelis, the tenth yacht in the 56m series; of the 55m motor yacht Galileo G, the second launching to date of the Picchiotti brand’s Vitruvius® series; and of Clan VIII, the fourth yacht in the 45m series.

A new superyacht berthing facility has been opened by British Waterways and their partner the Canary Wharf Group. The new facilities at Wood Wharf will provide 20 moorings for superyachts ranging in size from 25m – 60m. Situated perfectly for access to the Olympic Games, it is anticipated that demand will be high and according to Gareth Stephens, British Waterways’ Harbour and Waterspace Manager
“The demand we’ve had for superyacht berths over the Olympics in our London Docklands facilities gave us the confidence to launch the Wood Wharf berths.”

Although the facility and service has just been launched, Stephens confirmed the operators have “already had about five superyachts make firm bookings for the Olympics”.

Wood Wharf is situated within Canary Wharf, which is of course at the centre of London’s financial district and it has been predicted that those who berth their yachts here will be able to combine business with pleasure for the duration of the Olympics. Canary Wharf Group are also offering event space adjacent to berths furthering business opportunities for clients.

Businessman and former Bobsleigh Olympian Nicholas Frankl is one who is planning to make the most of this opportunity. He is berthing the 45m FeadshipHarle here for the summer as part of his company My Yacht Group, which offers turnkey luxury hospitality.

Other interested parties who want to make the most of the Olympics include Mark Upton of MGMT, who runs The Superyacht Concierge service,who said:
“I would estimate London will see around 30 superyachts, if not more. We’ve had a lot of enquiries so far and there’s still a sense of plans being made at the last minute, so we should see many more bookings in the run-up to the Olympics. ”

The facilities have been made available following the Superyacht Destination UK summit 8 months ago. Discussions took place by industry leaders as to how to make the most of the opportunities available to increase superyacht traffic for the duration of the Olympic Games.

Superyacht industry makes Radio 5 Live

It’s 06.40 on a Tuesday morning; you’re listening to 5 Live Breakfast and you hear about – superyachts. Imagine then my surprise and pleasure at hearing Toby Allies, the eloquent Superyacht UK committee member and sales and marketing director at Pendennis Shipyards Ltd, talking so optimistically and enthusiastically about the UK super yachts industry on air this morning…

Just as the wake settles after another stunning Monaco Yacht Show, Toby’s commentary on the buoyant UK superyacht sector made a refreshingly exotic change from the economic doom and gloom so often heard on breakfast time radio.

The UK – a leading centre in the superyacht world

Like so many others who enjoyed the recent Monaco show, I was impressed by the latest from Pendennis, Hemisphere – at 44m, the largest sailing catamaran in the world. Mention of the stunning Van Peteghem Lauriot Prévost (VPLP) design gave perfect focus to Toby’s positive perspective on the UK’s role as a leading centre for building, refitting and repair of superyachts. And then, as we know, there are all the associated brokerage, design, interiors and other services that go with the world’s most luxurious vessels.

The whole spectrum of superyachting in five minutes

I enjoyed hearing such an interesting commentary on the state of the industry. During the satisfyingly detailed interview, Allies covered the whole spectrum of superyachting. It was all in there, from the beginner-friendly ‘What constitutes a superyacht?’ (length exceeds 24m) to a comment on typical super yacht prices (£6m upwards) that clearly impressed the show’s presenter, Rachel Burden. And when Allies mentioned the UK industry’s £420m-plus annual value, no one could doubt the substantial contribution superyachting makes to the economy.

That’s bomb-bay doors, not Bombay doors!

Naturally, there were several mouthwatering descriptions of the latest must-have superyacht accessories, such as continuous-flow swimming pools and tender hangars with duos of 7.5m RIBs behind the bomb-bay doors. I had to chuckle as one of the BBC team heard this as ‘Bombay doors’, which led to a deluge of texts and emails from alert listeners, keen to put her right and dispel any associations with Indian cuisine…

The superyacht world – a beacon of optimism and light

Whether your taste is Hemisphere’s groundbreaking spaciousness, the Moroccan themes on Benetti’s Told U So, or the Prix du Design winning Satori, Monaco 2011, and Toby Allies’s radio interview, remind us that, in a world of angst and despair, the superyachting world remains a welcome beacon of optimism.

British manufacturer Samuel Heath will preview its key collection of new designs and bathroom fittings at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show at Parvis Piscine, QP20.

As the latest addition to its collection, the company will be showcasing its Fairfield Geometric Crystal Levers, a stunning new lever option available on all Fairfield taps and showers.

Featuring precision-cut crystal, designed to animate the light for perfect brilliance, the faceted, angular design of the lever, contrasts beautifully with the soft, sweeping curves of the Fairfield brassware.

Meticulously formed from the purest European brass at Samuel Heath’s factory in Birmingham, the Fairfield collection has been hand polished and plated in up to 34 individual processes for a flawless, durable finish.

The Fairfield collection includes deck-mounted taps in either high or low spout, as well as concealed thermostatic showers, which are perfect for superyacht interiors. A wide selection of finishes are available including stainless steel, chrome, polished nickel and antique gold and offer the flexibility to suit various interior schemes, whilst the crystal levers can be specified in either clear or black.

Designed by Laurent Giles Naval Architects, H2 Yacht Design and Icon Yachts, Britannia is elegant and sleek. “Our aim was to produce a design with wide market appeal and character to make it individual and be recognizable as an Icon product,” explains Jonny Horsfield, H2 Yacht Design’s founder.

This megayacht has style and many innovations including a glass elevator and a circular dining room which is encircled by full length windows. Further features include a glass bottom Jacuzzi which cleverly filters light into the bridge deck. There is a beach club which has another Jacuzzi, sauna and a hamam. Britannia can accommodate a maximum of 24 guests and a crew of around 25. However, depending on your own specs, a very luxurious and spacious arrangement of accommodations for 12 plus a magnificent stateroom for the owner can easily be done.

The recommended means of propulsion, is a diesel-electric engine which should give a top speed of 19 knots with a cruising speed of 16 knots. When cruising at 16 knots, the range should be in the region of 6,000 nautical miles. Britannia is equipped with 2 limousine tenders to shuttle guests to and from port. She is also kitted out with a selection of water toys and water sports equipment.

The Monaco Yacht Show, which runs from the 21^st – the 24^th September, is almost upon us again. It is always an exciting occasion and this year is no different. With the glamour and the legendary parties, the superyachts on display are sure to be a huge draw. Not only will there be a vast array of magnificent superyachts to view, there will also be 2 megayachts on show.

The show has been running for almost 40 years and takes great pride in showing off some of the world’s most spectacular superyachts. There are five hundred exhibitors and Burgess will be the main feature, exhibiting 8 of the finest superyachts as well as hosting a full hosipitality area on the dockside. Burgess will have at their disposal a fleet of private tenders and Rolls-Royces to ferry clients on to the yachts and around the exhibition.

Burgess will be presenting the following new superyachts:

Numptia, an impressive 70m motor yacht designed by an Italian firm is exquisitely chic and features a unique glass lift which goes through 4 decks and a dedicated spa deck.

The 60.2m Yogi is built to replicate a resort with all the amenities one would expect. She can accommodate a dozen guests and boasts a pool, a panoramic al fresco dining room, beach club, media room and a full complement of leisure equipment. Yogi is co-exhibited by the shipyard Proteksan Turquoise.

Lady Trudy has been built in a contemporary style to bring to mind a Hamptons beach house. She has many features including a helopad, sun deck, gym and large drop-down swim platform.

At 42.1m, the E&E has been built to a very high spec and has been designed for those who wish to cruise around the world in luxury. She has a generous master suite along with 4 cabins on the 2^nd deck.

The Feadship built HELIX is 44.7m in length and features a traditional nautical interior design of dark woods and neutral colours giving a warm and pleasant feel. HELIX has accommodations for up to ten guests.

Excellence III already has a notable reputation for her beauty and elegance. She is 57.3m and has been designed for entertaining.

At 61m the April Fool is an award winning motor yacht. Her accommodations are luxurious and her interior is fitted with oak and cherry. She can host 10 guests in comfort and style.

Sunrise was built in 2000 and at 52.8m was built to provide fun and luxury for her owner. She has 2 jacuzzi spa pools and plenty of space for relaxing and dining.

Perseus is an impressive 49.8m sailing yacht which can accommodate up to 10 guests in luxury. The interior is fitted with rich wood panelling and there is lots of space for relaxing or dining indoors or out.

The stars of the show are likely to be Hemisphere and Cakewalk. Hemisphere is not only the world’s largest catamaran at 44.2m but unique. Cakewalk has been much hyped all season and is a jewel.

Veritais Secures Agreement for on board entertainment systems.

Veritais Signs Agreement with E3 Palma

Veritais has reached agreement with top marine electronics company e3 Systems to act as a distribution partner for the Mallorca-based company. This represents an extension of the Veritais business model that previously focused on specifying premium-level, on board entertainment systems. Under the new arrangement Veritais will now also be supplying VSAT, 3G Europe, GSM and Air time products, plus the full range of e3 IT and data services. The agreement also allows for a two-way partnership, with Veritais technicians available to provide dockside support to e3 customers.

“It’s a logical move for us, and one really driven by our clients,” said Veritais managing director David Milner. “The border between entertainment and communications systems has been blurring for some time as Internet and satellite TV services increasingly come supplied via the same hardware as voice and data communications. After all the hype surrounding rumours of a gold superyacht worth £3 billion have now proved to be a hoax, we can reveal that a golden tender has been commissioned. A Williams 505D tender has been customised with gold paint, custom tubes, an MP3 music system, underwater lights, fresh-water shower and the superyacht’s name embroidered on the upholstery.

The boat has been ordered from Williams Performance Tenders and this is the real deal. How do you go about designing a superyacht? There are undoubtably many different approaches to this conundrum but one apparent success story is that of the Kaiser. A collaboration between German shipbuilders Abeking & Rasmussen and interior designers Bannenberg & Rowell resulted in the fabulously designed Kaiser.

Both sets of manufacturers met with the owners many times to find a style and concept from where to begin. Many styles were investigated to provide the basis and then the construction of a very German blueprint. She is imposing, stylish and very unique. Bannenberg & Rowell researched the WW1 Kaiser-class battle ships to find a substantial design but also to give a military feel by the use of an inspired ribbon motif as an underscore on the yacht’s name.

The main saloon is open and welcoming whilst retaining an aloofness. The clever use of large sofas in this saloon is a very distinctive feature which allows guests to feel comfortable and relaxed. The saloon is lined with African Ovangkol hardwood panelling, carpeted and decorated with the careful use of colour to create a stunning interior. The centrepiece is a magnificent coffee table which complements the design of the saloon.

Forward of the main saloon is a beautifully designed dining room which will comfortably seat twelve. The style of the main saloon is continued through to the dining room with the same use of colour, texture and pattern to give a luxurious yet warm ambience.

As with the rest of the vessel, the master suite is luxurious and beautifully designed to offer comfort and practicality. An en suite bathroom has been skilfully designed with marble and mirrors to give a very pleasant yet roomy impression.

Guest quarters continue the theme of using plush materials to provide an exquisite cabin offering a quiet calm oasis but at the same time, has the lavishness of the rest of the vessel.

The sky lounge provides an area for private dining, relaxing at the bar or just watching tv.

The outside decks are divided into different areas with the forward deck being fitted with a private Jacuzzi, sunbathing area and a bar. A dumbwaiter connects the sundeck with the galley allowing the crew to look after guests easily. The aft deck has a removable awning which provides plenty of shade. Decks are equipped with sun loungers for guests to relax on.

It would appear that the collaboration between Bannenberg & Rowell and Abeking & Rasmussen in producing the Kaiser has been a magnificent success. The future looks very bright indeed and it will be very interesting to see what concepts these teams produce.

A unique and magnificent vessel

There is something a bit special about the Galileo G and not just that she is a magnificent 55m superyacht. She has a large comms dome and has been designed to ice class as she is to traverse the notorious North West Passage. Built by Perini Navi in their Picchiotti yard, this unique vessel follows in the footsteps of the much praised Peini Navi built 50m Exuma, which was launched a year ago.

Both the Exuma and the Galileo G have been designed specifically for their owners by Philippe Briand, who is a sailing yacht designer of high repute. Briand uses his expertise in sailing yacht hulls to design a hull which is efficient in the water and has excellent seaworthiness. ‘The concept,’ explains Briand, ‘is to be an efficient motor yacht. You achieve this through having the right proportions and from the design of the hull lines, using previous experience of designing sailing yachts to get those lines. Both Galileo G and Exuma before her were also built to the specific requirements of their owners. For Galileo G, the basic requirement was the same as Exuma in the sense of going further in remote areas, but the owner had other requirements – he was not limited by wanting to keep the yacht under 500GT. After some discussion we decided to go quite high above that, and ended up with a 725GT, 55 metre yacht. The 10 per cent increase in length has therefore delivered a 50 per cent increase in volume.’

The interior has been designed mainly in mahogany with wenge and with comfort in mind. The crew quarters feature white panelling and much deliberation has gone into these accommodations as the vessel will be sailing in isolated areas of the oceans for considerable amounts of time.

Due to her remarkable design, the Galileo G is incredibly stable in the water and unusually quiet inside. At just over 16 knots, a hard turn produces very little heel and virtually no fore and aft pitch, which is an incredible achievement considering her stabilisers were switched off at the time. Equally impressive is the noise levels or rather the lack of noise inside. When cruising at 10 knots, a very pleasing 46dB was all that registered from the office area in the owner’s suite. This yacht is bound to spark a lot of interest and you will no doubt, be hearing more about her.

Everyone is going green these days even the manufacturers of superyachts. London firm Rainsford Mann Design have come up with an 80m Eco-yacht which has been specifically designed to reduce carbon and ecological damage. The main features are for producing renewable energy from solar panels, wind turbines and new sky sail technology, which incidentally can reduce fuel consumption by up to 50%. Also, there are ultra efficient generators which reduce toxic emissions. These new turbines are quieter and create less vibration which lessens the damage to environmentally sensitive areas such as coral reefs.

As well as producing up to 30 Kw of power from solar panels and wind turbines, heat from the solar panels drive an absorption chiller which reduces the air temperature within the yacht. This lessens the strain on the air conditioning system. Waste heat from the generators can also be used to power the absorption chillers. Another way of reducing the internal temperature is the use of natural ventilation by the use of special glazing in conjunction with external stutters by drawing up cool air from shaded sea water.

Twelve guests can be accommodated in comfort and style. The owner’s suite has a hidden balcony that when deployed, becomes a platform above the sea. Plenty of fun is to be had in and out of the water. This yacht is ideal for those who wish to be ‘green’ and still make an impact.

New superyacht designed to look like a floating island

Yacht Island Design's Tropical Island Paradise
A new superyacht has been designed by Yacht Island Design which comes in the form of a floating island. The 90m yacht has been designed from inspiration from the islands in the Caribbean, Indian Ocean and Polynesia. Studio director Rob McPherson explained that the yacht was designed to be something very different from the current designs.

This is not the first unusual design from Yacht Island Design, their last eye catching design called Streets of Monaco, and it is unlikely to be the last. However, these concept pieces are unlikely to be manufactured again which makes them a little bit like fashion designers who prepare dazzling and sometimes outlandish couture for a show. This latest design features a volcano on the main deck and would be able to accommodate the owner and 8 guests in luxurious comfort with each suite having its own balcony. The owner’s accommodations are set within the volcano and includes its own private balcony and spa. Other features of this remarkable vessel include floating beach islands which when deployed become a sea level platform allowing guest to enjoy water sports or just relax on.

As with all superyachts, this one is also fitted with a cinema, gym, fully equipped spa and also has a library and a games room. On the outside decks there are a number of cabanas for guests to relax in and around. Mr McPherson says “We had two reasons, the first being that it’s good fun, and secondly the current market is pretty saturated with designs that look fairly similar. Our mission is to work on incredibly fun designs and carve a niche for ourselves within the market, a place where other designers fear to tread.”

Megayacht Eclipse available to hire

The superyacht Eclipse is available to rent for a cool £1.25m per week. Eclipse was built at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg and was launched in June 2009. She is the world’s biggest private yacht and measures 533ft and has 20,000 sq ft of interior space. Commissioned and owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich at a cost of over £300m, Eclipse has many extras not normally found such as a missile defence system, armour plating, bullet proof windows, an ‘anti-paparazzi shield’ and even a mini submarine which can dive to a depth of 150 ft.

Thirty guests can be accommodated in opulent cabins, each of which are fitted with a 6ft wide TV screen and a luxury bathroom. There are 2 swimming pools, a gym, hair salon, sauna, steam room and whirlpool for guests to enjoy. One of Eclipse’s swimming pools can be converted into a dance floor, perfect for those fabulous evening festivities, plus she also has 2 helipads.

There is a staff of 70 and the annual cost is estimated be in the region of £50m. The cost of filling the fuel tank is around £400,000. You can hire the yacht on a daily basis for a cost of £175,000 or for a week at a cost of £1.25m through SuperYachtsMonaco.

The security features ensure privacy and protection. The anti-paparazzi shield works by directing lasers at the cameras, thereby preventing photographs being taken. Bullet proof windows and armour plating protect the vessel from attack and she has her own missile defence system for further protection. A small submarine is onboard to allow guests to escape in the event of a security breach.

Mr Romanovich, already well known as the owner of Chelsea FC, also owns 3 other superyachts. He caused controversy last month when he arrived in Venice unannounced and moored the Eclipse causing locals and tourists to complain that the view was being spoilt.

Built by the Dutch shipyard Oceanco and delivered ahead of schedule, this luxurious craft has been designed to afford its guests every comfort. She has been elegantly designed and gives the feel of bright airiness and space.

Seven Seas can accommodate a dozen guests in palatial style and still has ample space for twenty three members of crew. The interior has been beautifully designed by Molly Isaksen to a very distinctive contemporary style, making exquisite use of gorgeous woods such as walnut, teak and rosewood. All the guest rooms are spacious, comfortable and are equipped with the latest entertainment systems. The owner has exclusive use of the upper deck which has its own outdoor plunge pool and viewing deck. The main salon is fitted with a 5 x 2m screen and two rows of raked seating allowing guests to view the latest movies in comfort and style. There is also another 250m2 of floor space which is ideal for hosting those gala evenings or a celebration lunch.

Oceanco has also fitted its signature swimming pool on the aft deck which can cleverly convert into a helipad! Another fantastic innovation has to be the projector, which when used on the 15ft glass wall of the swimming pool, gives guests the opportunity to watch a film whilst relaxing on deck. There is also a fully equipped gym, a spa and massage room plus a full range of water sports equipment.

A custom 10.5m limo tender and a custom 9.2m open sport boat are available for getting ashore whilst at anchor. The Seven Seas has a cruising speed of around 14 knots with a top speed of around 20 knots. She is fitted with the most advanced communications equipment.

There are large well upholstered armchairs and sofas, designed by Paola Lenti, giving a perception of both privacy and openness whilst allowing guests to enjoy the spectacular views. The leather upholstery in the lounge is a pleasing shade of ecru. A dining area is elegantly fitted with a crystal topped table and Matteo Grassi seats.

The main saloon has a hallway which leads to the stairs giving access to all decks. The owner’s cabin features an en suite bathroom, walk-in wardrobe and a desk. The guest quarters offers accommodations for 8 and also feature en suite facilities and splendid views outside. With plenty of windows, guests can enjoy an abundance of natural daylight. The crew quarters are situated on the lower deck and are accessible via a staircase in the main deck galley.

From the central staircase you have access to the upper deck and helm. Also situated on the upper deck is a large open deck kitted out with free standing sun beds for guests to enjoy all that glorious sunshine. There is a grill and bar area on this deck giving the opportunity for outdoor entertaining whilst taking advantage of the panoramic views.

Monte Carlo’s luxurious Le Meridien Hotel played host to one of THE parties of the year, informa Business who organise the Monaco Yacht Show welcomed a plethora of guests to enjoy their hospitality at the Monaco Yacht Show Summer Party.

Guests mingled in the tranquil grounds of Le Meridien Hotel where they were lavished with exquisite food and drink whilst working those all important networks. They also enjoyed the live music provided by gifted musicians. Completing the ambience was the spectacular views of the M/Y Natita anchored in the bay.

After last year’s Monaco Yacht Show, there was plenty to be bullish about with many believing that the superyacht industry is beginning to bounce back. There was a fine showing from the best superyacht companies, which gave visitors plenty of food for thought. The outlook for the 2011 show looks very promising indeed and Informa Business are preparing for another triumphant event on September 21st – 24th. The MD of the Monaco Yacht Show, Gaelle Tallarida paid tribute to those who are involved with preparing for and running the show. Many of the ‘big guns’ in the superyacht world have lent their support, which has only added to the exhilaration and anticipation of the forthcoming Monaco Yacht Show.

There is also a large whirlpool spa and a bar on this deck. The other three decks offer full sun or shade which are perfect for quiet relaxation. On the other hand, they are also ideal for parties when many guests will be aboard for the duration of the festivities. Guests can also enjoy a wide range of watersports, the Cakewalk is kitted out with a good variety of equipment.

Overseas Scholarship Scheme ( great news and opportunities for Yacht Chefs)

Tante Marie School of Cookery is pleased to announce the availability of a number of worldwide scholarships open to prospective overseas students wishing to attend the School’s Cordon Bleu Diploma Courses. The number and value of the scholarships shall be at the discretion of the Board of Tante Marie but scholarships will normally result in a discount of anything between 5% and 20% on Tante Marie’s published fees for the Cordon Bleu Diploma or Intensive Diploma Course. Students will be expected to pay for their own travel and living expenses whilst studying at Tante Marie.

The Board may in its absolute discretion decline to award any scholarships unless it receives applications that it considers to be of sufficient merit. The decision of the Board in respect of the award of scholarships as notified by the Principal of Tante Marie will be final. The Board reserves the right not to consider scholarship applications which are received after a student has enrolled on a particular course.

The scholarships are open to all prospective overseas students (nationals of, or persons permanently resident in, an overseas country including the United Kingdom’s Overseas Territories) or overseas students studying in the UK at the time of application. Applicants are responsible for ensuring they will be able to comply with any UK immigration requirements.

Applicants for scholarships, who should have attained at least 16 years of age on commencement of their chosen course dates (there is no upper age limit), should submit by the following dates relevant to each course.

There are no more scholarship places available for the April 2011 course.
For September 2011 submit by: 1st July 2011
For January 2012 submit by 1st October 2011

Antibes Yacht Show 2011

Antibes Yacht Show’s organisers are very satisfied with their fifth year.

If the show is a barometer for the rest of the season as many say, then we can be looking forward to a great season in the yachting industry.

Amongst the 150 yachts and the 180 exhibitors the visitors were happy with the variety that was displayed at the show.

Charters were booked and smaller yachts (20 meters) were sold. The larger yachts remain Antibes’ forte, as several (from 37-43m yachts) received offers and several brokers informed us they had very interesting contacts.

The exhibition seemed bigger with the 2 new marquees replacing the previous small tents villages. The growing visitors (13 000 this year) were pleased with the new structures which gave shade and coolness in the hot spring sun that shone for the 4 days.

It also allowed the organisers to regroup all of the equipment and interior decoration exhibitors in a new ‘refit area’.

The new ‘Crew Lounge’ sponsored by Bluewater Yachting was the most ‘fun and creative corner of the show’; a little haven for all crew visiting the show who enjoyed many activities from an intense chef competition to a very entertaining kayak race.

The ‘Happy Hours’ and the live band in the evening raised the level to an enthusiastic party.

Just above, the BastionSt Jaume, the Captains’ Lounge, was just as crowded. As the Captains got pampered they discovered the progress of the Montenegro Marina on their very impressive model and were also informed on pension plan with DeVere Group.

Riviera Yacht Support who organises the charity golf every year, chose not to give to the usual school (Montessory), but decided to contribute to the Red Cross Japenese Tsunami’s victims fund instead. Their noble gesture will increase the funds of some six hundred euros.

This year, the inauguration presided as usual by the M. Leonetti, Mayor of Antibes, honoured M. Camille Rayon (Antibes Yacht Show’s honorary president from 2007). At the eve of revealing the model presenting the extension of the IYCA, the officials decided to rename “Le Quai des Milliardaires” to “Quai Camille Rayon.” A justified gesture as M. Rayon is the creator of the IYCA.

Antibes Yacht Show is also keeping up with today’s technology. Visitors could access the Wi-Fi for a few hours daily at no cost, thanks to the Show’s internet partner GMC/Seas. For the first time the exhibitors had a Wi-Fi connection that really worked.

With so much business done early in the season Antibes Yacht Show, reinforces its place as the show to be in the spring in the Mediterranean area.

So the Dubai International Boat Show is over for another year. Despite talk of reduced visitor numbers for 2011, the vibe around the yacht marina at Mina Seyahi seemed as upbeat as ever at this perennial superyacht favourite.

New market opportunities in the world’s biggest super yacht market

Early signs were that families visited in unprecedented numbers this time – not just for a great day out but as serious potential buyers of yachts in the Dhs 150,000–200,000 range. Does this reflect the increasing affordability of smaller yachts in a market traditionally associated with ownership of one in three of the world’s superyachts. We think so.

Renewed optimism in Middle East super yachting

On the subject of top of the range yachts, the show featured more than 10 world launches, over 40 premieres and more than 400 vessels on display at the Dubai International Marine Club. And as reported elsewhere on the SuperYachts Directory news pages, we were delighted to learn that Sunseeker sold one of its blue-water-ready 40 Metre Yachts to a local buyer. It’s facts like this that reflect the return of consumer confidence reported by Trixi Loh, VP-Exhibitions, Dubai World Trade Centre, during a pre-show broadcast for AMEinfo.com.

Super car design meets super yachts in more ways than one

Whilst our main focus is on super yachts, we were impressed by the organisers’ decision to create the new Supercar Promenade this year. Along with the enlarged Super Yacht Boulevard this decision speaks further supports the confidence of the show’s organisers. Our favourite car? It has to be a toss up between the 6.3-itre Brabus 800 and Hamman’s striking yellow and black Mercedes coupe.

We were also wowed by the ‘supercar looks’ of Danish Yachts’ AeroSpeed Yacht tender. Currently at concept stage, the SuperYachts Directory understands that this new Rainsford Mann design will go into production soon. It’s stunningly beautiful.

We’re already looking forward to the 20^th Dubai yacht show…

So, as the sun set on Dubai at the end of the show, Sunseeker sales, breathtaking super yacht designs, new market opportunities in the Middle East and growing optimism made this an event to remember. We can’t wait until next year and the excitement that will inevitably surround the 20th Dubai show.

At least one 40m Sunseeker sold at last week’s Dubai International Boat Show

The SuperYachts Directory team was pleased to see that UK-based Sunseeker sold one of its flagship 40-metre super yachts to a Middle East buyer at last week’s Dubai International Boat Show, held at the Dubai International Marine Club, Mina Seyahi.

According to Sunseeker, the 40 Metre Yacht, which debuted at the PSP Southampton Boat Show in 2010, has been specifically designed for extended cruising. Anyone who recalls the impact Tanvas had at Southampton will understand its appeal.

RINA Unrestricted for blue water superyacht cruising

With its ‘sculptural side profile’ and ‘gentle cascade aft of the tri-deck design’ this super yacht has been designed and built for blue water cruising. As a logical development of Sunseeker’s popular 37 Metre Yacht, the vessel combines the best of the smaller boats with balconies and more exterior deck space for up to 12 guests and seven crew.

Checking the spec reveals 26-knot capability and up to 1500 nautical miles’ range – pretty much Greece to Gibraltar without refuelling. We also understand that as well as being constructed to RINA Pleasure and optional RINA Charter/MCA LY2 Unrestricted codes, this super yacht falls conveniently within the critical 350 gross tonne volume threshold – an important consideration for charterers.

Palatial super yacht style

Quite rightly, Sunseeker use the term palatial to describe their 40m superyacht. As at Southampton, we were impressed by its accommodation and the clever layout that allows crew to move discreetly about the boat. Veritais Awarded AV Contract for Listed Property

Veritais has been awarded the AV contract to supply, install and commission a distributed music, movie, DVB-T, FM and satellite system throughout a large listed property in Warwickshire. Internet access points, wireless equipment and aerials will also be supplied.

The property is split into ten zones, including 5 bedrooms, and provides distributed audio and movies from a 2TB central media server, both DVB-T and SKY TV distribution and features audiophile loudspeakers and subwoofers in all zones. Control of the system is provided by a number of easy to use touch screen remote controls.

Central equipment includes a Blu-ray recorder with in-built Freesat tuner, allowing full HD playback and recording of Sky and digital TV channels, with audio content streamed from the central server via wireless audio hubs in each zone. A 24-port network switch allows the 2TB server to be accessed via local CAT6 outlets, so movies and other media content can be stored and distributed through a number of DLNA TVs throughout the property.
The Drawing Room features a high quality 5.1 surround sound amplifier, with local iPod input and state-of-the-art concealed in-wall loudspeakers and subwoofer. A concealed 46” plasma DLNA TV is accessed using a motorised lift mechanism rising from under the floor and activated using the touch screen remote control.

The Kitchen/Breakfast area also features a concealed 46” plasma TV behind a mirror and revealed using a heavy-duty electric lift to maneuver the mirror when access to the TV is required.

The Dining Room also features a 46” plasma TV mounted on ultra slim bracket and connected via DLNA to the central server for movie content. Flush, ceiling mount loudspeakers will be installed and allow music playback from the central server and local wireless audio hub.

All five bedrooms will be ‘future-proofed’ with CAT6 and TV access points, plus RJ45 access for internet connectivity.

The Dubai-based Aquiva Group plans to moor a 170 metre superyacht at Thames Quay on the River Thames to act as a 158-room floating hotel during the London Olympic games.

Its owners hope it will then become one of London’s premier luxury hotels for the 50 years that follow the games.

When completed, the superyacht will have seven decks, sleep more than 300 people and will contain a private members’ club, luxury spa and several restaurants.

The vessel will dwarf the 147m £200m super-yacht Eclipse owned by Chelsea Footbal Club owner Roman Abramovich. It will be 15 metre longer than the Barclays HQ Tower in Canary Wharf is tall and that is the equivalent of one and a half football pitches.

In place of the bridge the engineless Aquiva will feature a presidential suite, although the customary will be present in all their luxurious glory.

Exterior styling will showcase sun decks and spa pools spread across teak decks with stainless steel railings and caprails, while the interior will feature finishes using exotic hardwoods, leather, marble, polished metals and original artwork all in classic superyacht style.

Guests will arrive at the hotel using tenders operating from the West India dockside and will be transported to and from selected Olympic locations in a fleet of Venetian-style water taxis.

Steve Tight of the Aquiva Group said: “We hope to bring a unique experience so visitors to London can enjoy the superyacht lifestyle. Obviously in the current economic climate there are technical and financial issues to iron out but the plan is to get the Aquiva in place for 2012.”

Culture comes to the island of Nevis in many styles and one place to find it celebrity style is at Sunshines Beach Bar on Pinneys Beach. Now Sunshine has lots of fine attributes, he cooks up and serves a terrific lunch of local fish including a superb amber jack and succulent conch known locally as Lambi. He is also famous for the walls of his shanty style beach shack, which are festooned with pictures of him embracing guests as diverse as John Travolta, The Duchess of York and George Bush.

There is a healthy sprinkling of pops stars including; John Lennon, Roger Daltry, Beyonce and the rap singer JC. From the world of film, we spotted Mel Gibson, Michelle Phifer, Jessica Sarah Parker along with Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones.

None of these of course, are the real reason to visit Sunshine because most people arrive at Sunshine’s looking to get stung by a Killer Bee. This seemingly innocuous fruit drink is a dangerously addictive rum punch, made up using his own secret ingredients which include passion fruit orange juice, a handsome slug of local rum and the contents of a strange looking plastic water bottle that appears to contain roots and local leaves and grasses steeped in….you’ve guessed it, more rum.

Strand Yachts has announced it is giving away free 233mph super-cars free of charge to everyone who buys a 37 metre super-yacht for £17million.

The luxury superyacht has four double staterooms, a reception area, and salon with 52" LED TVs. It can reach top speeds of 43 knots, though you'd never know it from the calm Art Deco interior.

Meanwhile, when you get back to dry land you can drive off in the 'free' matching supercar, which is powered by a 880hp twin turbo V12 engine, can do 233mph and is be parked in the built in garage.

If you have the sort of money to splash out on a £17m toy you will have to act quick as only six are being produced… also, we don't suppose you want to buy an odd news website do you?

Swedish firm Strand Craft say that despite the large price tag they have already had a number of enquiries from 'very wealthy' people in the Middle East.

Boss Kurt Strand added: "We have had a lot of interest from all over the world, specifically the Middle East, it was designed for luxury and for people who want the best.

"The custom made super car is the best feature, both the boat and the car are very high performance and the boat is very fast.

"It is very unique and we are making it in limited numbers, so it’s exclusive, we are only making six."

Because they have plenty to celebrate, MTN and e3 Systems will be co-sponsoring a themed evening party to be held at the 2010 Superyacht Cup Palma in Spain on June 24, 2010.

Over 20 superyachts, 600 participants, and 1,000 owners, crew, guests, and industry representatives are expected to attend.

The companies are celebrating the fact that after successful sea trials of the 557-foot MY Eclipse, the world’s largest yacht they can reveal that it is they who are the chosen VSAT services provider.

Camper Nicholsons International and Charter Spa Services teamed up to offer a highly successful massage promotion on board the superyacht Cloud 9 during the MYBA show in Genoa.

During the show in Genoa last month 26 brokers from some of the top agencies in the yachting industry were treated to massages by Heather Hawthorne and Charter Spa Services onboard the stunning yacht.

Charter Marketing Managers for Camper Nicholsons arranged the promotion on Cloud 9 and invited attending brokers to personally experience the luxury, pampering spa treatments available for their charter clients.

Cloud 9 has extra accomodation for supernumeraries like massage therapists so it was the perfect yacht to offer the promotion on. Lucky brokers were able to see the transformation of the yachts gym into a tranquil and relaxing massage treatment room while experiencing a massage from the industry’s top massage and beauty professional.

Stars on Superyachts Sail to St Lucia

St Lucia has always been a popular destination with many superyachts. Now with the opening of new IYG super yacht facilities at Rodney Bay Marina the island is seeing celebrities arriving with their mega yachts.

Recent visitors have included rock star Bono, golfer Tiger Woods, Russian entrepreneur Roman Abramavich and US talks show host Oprah. The new facilities can now take yachts on 32 dedicated berths up to 76 metres in length.

The new airport terminal at Hewanorra International Airport in Vieux-Fort is designed to accommodate increased airlift, which is scheduled to triple in the summer of 2010 and to bring the airport up to speed with international trends and standards. Work started on the new terminal in January 2010 and it will take two years to complete.

St Lucia’s first casino is due to open next month and the Baywalk Shopping Mall in Rodney is close to completion with two floors of retail shops including some of the world’s best luxury brands.

Superyachts, a Passion for the Berlusconi Family

With the Italian government in Rome launching plans to recover 24 billion Euros in back taxes, the Ferreti Custom Line Yard in Ancona has, according to the newspaper Corriere della Sera, launched a brand new superyacht for Pier Silvio Berlusconi.

The newspaper reports him as the vice-president of Mediaset but the rest of the world will recognize him as the son of the Italian Prime Minister.

As for the yacht, she is a Custom Line 124, said to be worth 18 million Euros. She has 4 suites and a fitness room, can reach a speed of 27 knots flat out and can accommodate up to ten people in addition to six crew.

Ferreti have described the yacht as the first of the124 series, the new flagship of the fleet of planing yachts from Custom Line.

This is not the first time Pier Silvio Berlusconi had chosen Ancona as the Italian city to supply his boat. Three years ago he took delivery of Suegno a 30 metres superyacht said to have cost about ten million Euros.
