Superyacht Design Awards for 2012

It was an incredible weekend. It began with a welcome cocktail at the luxury boutique Armaggan. This beautiful shop masterfully combines original comtemporary designs with traditional techniques to produce exclusive hand-made jewellery, objets d’art, naturally dyed textiles, leather goods and home textiles.
Armaggan is located in the heart of historic Istanbul, and this was an opportunity to enjoy the unique items that make up each of its exclusive hand-made collections. With canapés and cocktails on offer it was a wonderful to start the weekend.
The following evening was the big night, the evening of the Superyacht Design Awards for 2012. Held in the magnificent surrounding of the Ciragan Palace Kempinski, right on the shores of the historic Bosphorus, the venue could not have been more perfect.
The event began with drinks on one of the palace terraces overlooking the Savarona. Once Kemal Ataturk’s boat, this magnificent 136 metre yacht, the biggest in the world when it was first launched in 1931, stood shimmering in the setting sun. After some time spent mingling with the other guest the sound of traditional Turkish musicians called everyone to dinner.
Once the 700+ guests had finished eating what turned out to be a very traditional Turkish meal, the awards ceremony began. It started off with a spectacular show from the Fire Dancers of Anatolia, a highly rated dance group whose performance was exclusively choreographed for this particular even. Following their stunning performance, Natasha Kaplinsky presented the 16 Neptune Awards and five judges commendations. The most prestigious awards (of best Motor Yacht and best Sailing Yacht) went to Tango and Vertigo respectively. There was also a very special award, known as the Legacy Award, which was given to Neville Crichton for his amazing contributions to the industry, both as a very accomplished sailing-yacht racer and a key man in the development of New Zealand’s superyacht building industry.
After the awards ceremony the majority of the guests left the dining room and proceeded to yet another beautiful ballroom where they danced the night away. They were not surprisingly, briefly interrupted by a couple of very impressive belly dancers.

The following afternoon, the majority of guests met up again at the Ciragan Palace to board the Savarona for an early evening cruise up the Bosphorus. Although there were certainly some sore heads around, the mood very quickly picked up. The Savarona was commissioned by Emily Roebling Cadwallader, the granddaughter of John Roebling, the engineer who built the Brooklyn Bridge. Built at a cost of $4million at the Blohn & Voss shipyard in Hamburg, Germany it was bought by the Turkish government and in March of 1938 became the presidential yacht of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. Sadly Ataturk died a few months later and the Savarona did not sail again until after the Second World War when the Turkish navy used her as a training ship.
In 1989 a decision was made to scrap her. However Kahraman Sadikoglu managed to save her from the scrapheap and leased the yacht for 49years. He then began the arduous process of restoring her. But the restoration has been magnificent, and it gave us all an experience we will not forget for a long time.
Aviso would once again like to say a special thank you to our hosts Proteksan Turquoise for such a great weekend and a great event. We also want to thank Boat International for organising the ceremony, and all the sponsors, RMK Marine, Perini Navi and everyone else who made the weekend possible.
Thank you very much. Looking forward to seeing you again next year.

May 19th Ladies Night at The Hotel Columbus Monte Carlo

Hi Everybody,

Just to let you all know about our upcoming very glitzy, very glamorous Ladies Fashion Show at Columbus in Monaco on the 19th May’12. The show is in aide of Amnesty International and Columbus Hotel very generously offered to host the show in their bar and lounge area.

In a few lines I would like to tell you all a bit about the show and everybody involved. Anna Sanders is the designer and the collection is called Provocative, is a summer collection and Anna’s inspiration was a leisurely day in the life of a woman so the show will start with swimwear moving on to day and casual wear and closing with evening gowns.

Some of Anna’s most recent credential are designing and making the costumes for the last performance of Sleeping Beauty at Ballet Theatre UK, she’s currently collaborating with costume designers at the Curve theatre and more importantly she was one of the designers that donated 3 of her apparels to be auctioned at our last show in aide of Amnesty International. Sylvia makes sure that we all look picture perfect, she has an eye for the hidden detail, for the colour in the background of the shade, for the glimpse of the thought that crossed the subject’s mind while listening to the lyrics of Somebody That I Use to Know (Gotye).

Carin is a model, an actress and a very good friend of mine, so she had not choice but had to help me with the show and her task is, besides being her glamour’s self, to look after the lovely young ladies that accepted to take part in the show. Natalia worked with me in the past on various charitable projects and the last one was the Indiana fashion show in London last November, she’s a hair stylist and she will help me with hair styling and she will be also one of the models on the night. Peter will be filming the event and Steve is in charge of the music.

I would like to thank to our new comers, Rebecca and Holly make-up artists, Sarah, Niki and Loris photographers and of course our very beautiful young models, Caroline, Cheryl, Francesca, Lisa, Mireille and Paige. The entrance is free so everybody is welcomed!!!!

It's Back in 2012 the Antibes Raft Race

The Antibes Raft Race is back after a 10-year gap since their memorable event in 2002 when they raised Euros 24,000 for the Antibes Lifeboat and other local charities.
Some 24 rafts built by the crews of the finest yachts in the World take to the water at Noon in the International Yacht Club d'Antibes / Port Vauban on the 21st April to compete along a triangular course for spectacular awards - and it's all the charity. A browse to the Raft Race website at www.raftrace.net will show the level of support for this event by all the major companies in Yachting.

1990 Raft racer Zelda Lunt - now Treasurer of the Antibes Raft Race Association and a Charter Fleet Manager with a major Riviera company - said "It's a once in a lifetime event, and I still remember how cold and wet it was. We won the award for 'Total Incompetence in Rafting' - a Golden Toilet Seat which hung in our offices for many years."

The Association President - Yacht Captain Gary Morton - was upbeat about his chances - "We have a fast raft this time, and expect to be a serious competitor for the famous 'Caramba Cup' which is traditionally awarded to the winning raft", he announced as he prepared for his sixth Raft Race, "The event brings the Yachting Industry together, is great fun, and is all for charity. A wonderful start to the Yachting season on the Riviera".

Money is raised by sponsorship from Yacht Owners and major companies in Yachting, and by the Evening Party - this year a "TITANIC" Theme Fancy Dress Party to commemorate the 100 years since the loss of the ship - at which a Raffle is held with prizes sponsored by local companies. In 2002, the Association raised Euros 24,000, and they hope to better that this year.

Veritais joins up with Sound A/D France

Veritais Ltd has been appointed exclusive European supplier to the luxury yacht sector by French company Sound A/D, a specialist in ultra high-quality speaker systems.  The agreement is for an initial 12 months.  Sound A/D is based in Cannes and markets two ranges of fully customisable speakers that Veritais recognised as being particularly attractive to owners of superyachts.

The first is a remarkable style of handmade audio speaker made in France by SOEE Soundesign that delivers 360° sound from either a ceiling-mounted (Up’s® speakers) or free standing (Drop’s® speakers - shown right) position. The ceiling mounted speakers, just 22 centimetres from base to tip, in particular are ideal for mounting across large interior spaces as well as in those that that require minimal clutter at floor level. An added benefit is that both types can be supplied in any finish including exotic skins, leather (shown right) or any type and colour of paint.

The distinctive cone positioned above / below the speaker diaphragm ensures omni-directional sound diffusion. Pricing starts at around €1,450 (£1,200) for a pair of Up’s® and rises depending on the finish selected.

Veritais will also be supplying the Almaria Art range of in-wall decorative speakers. These speakers have the appearance of wall mounted works of art, with the slim speaker-box behind the frame easily embedded in the wall if preferred. The frames can be fully customised in paint, wood or leather and the acoustic fabric that conceals three speakers delivering up to 100 watts can be treated to reproduce any work of art or photograph desired. Prices start at around €1,200 (£1,000) per pair without artwork.

“We are very pleased to be working with Veritais,” said Pierre Antoine Siard of Sound A/D. “They have the profile in the superyacht sector that we need to bring these exceptional and distinctive speakers to the attention of owners and designers and we look forward to a productive 2012.”

“The SOEE and the Almaria Art speakers offer attractive alternatives to yacht designers looking for audio solutions that take up little or no space and which can be finished to blend in with any interior decoration scheme, added David Milner at Veritais. “We believe that these meet a real need at the top end of the market and are delighted to be working alongside Sound A/D to bring these innovative products to a wider audience.”

Lantic latest news

LANTIC INTRODUCES INNOVATIVE HD STREAMER
WITH 4 X HDMI INPUT PORTS
Delivers significant space and cost savings for onboard AV systems

Lantic Entertainment Systems is delighted to announce the introduction of its innovative new HD Streamer for onboard audio-visual systems.  Up until now HD streamers have been able to stream only one channel at a time, with the result that yachts with extensive networked AV systems often require racks containing up to 20 or more such units.  Lantic has now developed a streamer based upon industrial components that has four individual HDMI input ports that enables it to stream four separate HD channels simultaneously.

While HD streamers with similar capabilities are becoming available from other manufacturers, Lantic’s new unit is both exceptionally compact and energy efficient, making it easier to install and far more effective in its use of space than the alternatives.  Having four channels in a single housing also makes expanding an onboard AV system much more straightforward and, as a final bonus, the use of the latest components also makes the Lantic satellite streamer significantly less expensive than its competitors.

Technically speaking, the Lantic HD streamer comes equipped with four HDMI input ports and the capability to encode up to 1080p HD video. Each HD streamer can control four satellite receivers using infrared.  This enables it to stream up to four simultaneous H.264 audio/video signals in a multicast format on Ethernet via a managed switch.
The HD satellite streamer is the latest in a line of new ground-breaking AV equipment from Lantic Entertainment Systems that is designed to make advanced onboard audio-visual systems more compact, more energy efficient and more straightforward for electrical integrators to install and commission.  As the only manufacturer of AV systems designed especially for yachts, Lantic maintains a continuous dialogue with yards, installers and owners to create the systems that match the requirements of these unique environments.

Lantic Entertainment Systems is the world leader in the development and assembly of integrated audio-visual entertainment systems for superyachts and is based in Denmark. Lantic systems can be found on board many of the world’s largest and most prestigious yachts.

Walnut Grove Cookery School/ Another loyal partner of ours on The Super Yachts Directory

At the Walnut Grove we offer two levels of cookery course, Regular and Advanced. Over the last five years we have had more and more chefs from the Super Yachts come on both levels of course, particularly the advanced course, and from the feedback we have had we feel very confident that what we offer fulfils all the needs of the Super Yacht Chefs that come.

Although our advanced course is structured, we have allowed plenty of time for individual tuition/needs to be taken care of – for example on one of the advanced courses we had a Super Yacht chef who wanted to review and rewrite all her menus, which we were able to do with the input from the other guests as well which she was delighted about. We have also been able to structure individual mis en place (prep) lists so that once you are back on the yacht life is so much easier and more organised.

We have become very proud of both of our courses, as over the years we have worked very hard to develop them to suit people’s needs. Perhaps the difference of our course compared to other schools might be that we are fully dedicated to making the courses as much hands-on as possible because we feel that really is the only way to learn and for you to exploit our experience as professional chefs. For testimonials from people that have come to the Walnut Grove, see our website www.walnutgrovecookery.com.  We have an advanced course starting on the 31st March until 5th April, this is being run for some Super Yacht Chefs so why not come and join them? Morton Marine Umbrellas offer high end parasols and shade umbrellas for the complete spectrum of motor yachts and Super Yachts. From one single parasol to multiple canopies, no project is too large or small.

We now have sales presence working out of Cannes, backed up with engineering and an installation facility. We examine every detail of a parasol before offering it for sale” said Richard Morton.
We are also able to liaise with Management companies to discuss the finer detail of installations and are very comfortable with talking with engineers about specific issues such as bases for the parasols.

Veritais Launch Reliable Yacht Automation System

The new Yacht Automation System from Veritais helps everything on your yacht work better by making it work together. The Veritais system solutions are flexible and scalable, allowing you to determine the control features and options that best suit your lifestyle. The Veritais marine solutions are about enhancing your routines and lifestyle.

Visual Appeal
To enhance the beauty and safety of your vessel, the system can automate your exterior running lights, allowing guests and crew to move around your yacht comfortably. Automation options range from triggering lights based on detected light levels to specific times of day. The system can also control your interior lights, dimming lights in certain rooms while brightening others so each room is just right.
The system can open and close blinds automatically and direct the thermostat when to go up or down to ensure comfort in the interior cabins. As the sun sets or skies become cloudy, the blinds can open, allowing for more natural light.

Entertaining On Board
Whether you’re entertaining a large group or want to set the mood for two, the system helps make your yacht the ideal setting. With The system you can dim the lights, easily create custom playlists so you can play the perfect mood music, choose movies easily from their cover art, and control your televisions and game systems. Space is at a premium on a yacht. AN ADDITIONAL ROYAL APPOINTMENT FOR HEIRLOOMS LTD

Heirlooms Ltd, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of bespoke fine linens, received a much coveted gift from the Royal Family just days before Christmas. It joins the ranks of less than 200 companies honoured with holding the grant of The Prince of Wales’ Royal Warrant.

The Warrant took effect from 1st January 2012 and has been approved for the next five years. Heirlooms Ltd is already “By Appointment to Her Majesty The Queen” and feels doubly honoured to receive this second Royal Warrant. It is a very public endorsement, not only of the quality of the company’s fine linens and high level of service, but also their ethical and environmental credentials, all of which are strenuously scrutinised before HRH decides that a company is fit to hold his Warrant and be styled “By Appointment to HRH The Prince of Wales”.

Heirlooms Ltd supply bed, table and bathroom linens to several members of the British royal family and have been doing so since 2001.
General Manager Ruth Douglas said: “We were delighted to be notified by the Lord Chamberlain's Office that Heirlooms Ltd has been granted the Royal Warrant of Appointment to the Prince of Wales. It is the most prestigious of endorsements and is the ultimate confirmation of the quality and service we provide.  As a company we are very proud to supply linens to many of the Royal Households and are delighted that our linens are part of royal housekeeping. There could be no greater honour or privilege.”

Founded in 1984 bybespoke linen manufacturers in the world. Synonymous with the highest standards of quality, the company’s linens are to be found in many of the world’s finest homes and superyachts.
Heirlooms Ltd holds a premier position within the industry and has a world renowned reputation for excellence, uncompromising attention to detail and exceptional expertise in interpreting and supplying the needs of its clients. Each item is crafted and manufactured at their production facility in West Sussex where accomplished embroiderers, designers and skilled machinists create linens of timeless elegance to complement even the most demanding of briefs on style and budget.

New Office Showroom in Barcelona & Caribbean Agent Appointment

Following on from our announcement yesterday of Dutch Agent representation, Deckers Uniforms appoint Nick & Sian Line as their Caribbean Agent Representative based in Antigua.  Additionally, a new office and Showroom will open shortly in Barcelona.

Nicholas Stael von Holstein of Deckers, remarks, ‘’Nick Line has extensive experience as a Yacht Captain and Manager and is well known and respected in the industry and in Antigua, where through his local network will provide a very personalised and hands on service.  Additionally, we will shortly be opening a new office base in Barcelona to fully support yachts based in Port Forum, MB92 and surrounding Marinas’’

Nick Line in Antigua, comments, ‘’Having been running large motor yachts for the last 15 years, I know only too well the frustrations of trying to top up uniform supplies, especially when you are away from the major yachting centres. With Deckers philosophy of introducing uniform which can be replenished, with a worldwide network, I believe yachts will be able to cut down on waste and be able to obtain their uniforms and tops ups regardless of where they are, with a more personal service. We are looking forward to representing Deckers in Antigua’’.

After the party

So the media were right and the Red Hot Chili Peppers (avec Toots of the legendary Maytals) played the Gouverneur Bay Estate on Saturday night as predicted. We didn’t make it to the gig and realistically, we were never going to get near Eclipse, but it was easy to share the late evening buzz from the Rue de la République as the fireworks went off over Gustavia and the A-listers were ferried to and from Eclipse and the other yachts ranged around the tiny harbour. Was that George Lucas we saw, albeit at a distance?

By all accounts, Mahi-mahi was also on the menu for the 400-odd guests (who said 300?) who drove themselves or were limoed through the super-tight party security. Xavier Pinet, one of St Bart’s culinary elite did the catering for the Abramovich party – but our New Year’s Eve supper tasted just as good in town. Hey! It’s St Bart’s and fish heaven – what do you expect?

Our extended and long-anticipated weekend certainly didn’t cost the £5 mil that Mr A reportedly put into his bash either. But it was still enormous fun getting a sniff of the island’s celebrity lifestyle before heading back to what will certainly be a cold and windswept UK next week.

In the meantime, back to superyacht business… Catching up on the media commentary online, we were surprised to read the suggestion in the Telegraph that some people might have considered the 536-foot long Eclipse an eyesore as it dominated Gustavia harbour.

As professional superyacht people with a valid and experienced view of superyacht style, we couldn’t disagree more. Having now seen Eclipse in the flesh – and I’ve seen most of the top yachts in my time – I can’t help wondering how anyone with any feeling for stunning lines could consider the Abramovich flagship anything but a gem, and a fitting crown jewel in the Terence Disdale portfolio – until his next masterpiece? Hey ho!

Just for the record, we love Eclipse. So, thank you Mr Abramovich for commissioning such delectable eye candy – even if the Super Yachts Directory didn’t get an invite to Gouverneur Bay. Maybe next year!

Big night on St Bart’s

There’s only one topic of conversation on St Barts and St Maarten this weekend. In case you’ve been asleep since Christmas Day, it’s the Abramovitch bash at his little place above Gouverneur Beach – 70-acres of prime beachfront real-estate that was once owned by David Rockefeller.

All week, to the incessant, but surprisingly engaging soundtrack of Radio St Barth FM, we’ve been star-spotting around the island and speculating – along with the world’s media – about the guest line-up and the Chelsea boss’s choice of live entertainment. Based on the widely circulated pics of Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and his family, the smart money is on the Chilis for the exclusive 10 till 4 party and its 300+ guests.

And then there’s the appearance of Eclipse, the jewel in the crown of the St Bart’s New Year yacht sail-in. Even if we don’t make it into Mr A’s gig, we’re hoping for a closer look at the Terence Disdale designed Blohm + Voss-built Eclipse over the weekend – all 164 beautiful metres of her, complete with those three launches, two helipads and the much talked about mini-sub. Something tells me that with one of the tightest-controlled guest lists and the usual ultra-strict Abramovitch security machine in place there’s no way we’ll get aboard this time. We can but dream…

Realistically, if we want anything more than a long-distance view, it’ll mean sweet talking our way onto one of the usual superyacht entourage that have joined Eclipse off the island. Doable? It all depends on who’s here and what happens tomorrow. Who knows – if we can’t swing this we’ll have a ball putting on our own ‘island chic’ tomorrow night,  piling into the hired SMART and heading over to our Gustavia to celebrate over Mahi-Mahi en-papillote. Whatever happens, we’ve got New Year’s Eve covered and we’ll be seeing in 2012 in style.

In the meantime, we’ll keep our ears to the ground over the next 48. Look out for another posting when the hangover’s have worn off next week. And in the meantime, whether you’re celebrating on Eclipse, rubbing shoulders with the A-listers at the party of the year, or just chilling out at a comfy 26 degrees, have a great New Year’s Eve. More in 2012…
